Advantages: Looks good, comfy for baby, good quality
Disadvantages: Some poor design features, very heavy and bulky, pram mode too small
So the pros to this pram -
As I mentioned before it looks very stylish, even after being on the market for quite a few years now the design still looks fresh and modern. I don't think it will look outdated for a long time.
In addition to it's looks, it also feels excellent quality in terms of the build and fabrics. It is very sturdy and the fabrics are well padded and easy to clean. The wheels are nice and don't wear excessively, and all the parts like the brakes, clips for the hood, and bumper bar clip in with a satisfactory clunk. It has height adjustable handles - but only two positions.
It can be used rear facing from birth if you switch to hood the other way round and with the addition of the included pram liner, which very comfy and cosy - my son was a late October baby and he was so snug in there over the winter. The liner is easy to remove and wash in the machine on a cool setting - I always used the hand-wash setting on my machine with a small amount of detergent and it came out like new every time.
When the child is a bit older (or indeed from birth as the seat lays flat) they can go forward facing if you turn the hood back the other way again and remove the pram liner. The seat has 4 (or 5?) height positions from totally upright to totally flat, and it can be adjusted by a lever on the back which is very smooth and easy to do without disturbing a sleeping baby. The bumper bar has a removable washable cover on, and can be swung open if necessary to allow easier access to put the child in and out. My son used to love pulling himself forward and putting his feet up on it!
It comes complete with a matching changing bag and very warm padded footmuff. The changing bag is a nice design and I got a lot of use from it even though I generally don't like matching bags. It has all the necessary pockets and compartments for all your baby items, and it hangs nicely over the handles.
The fold is relatively simple (though takes some practice at first) and smooth - you do have to have the seat in the upright position before folding and make sure it's compacted together properly so it locks closed. It cannot be folded with one hand which is a pain. When unfolding it you have to again make sure the sides it stands upright on are clicked into place.
Now on to the cons! -
Despite being marketed as a lightweight system, it's anything but! It is incredibly heavy, which isn't so apparent when you have a tiny newborn in it who doesn't weigh much - but as soon as they get to around 6 months old (especially if they are a chunky baby like my son was) it becomes almost tank like, and vitually impossible to steer due to the separate "buggy style" handles, which flex independently. It isn't the most compact system when folded either, and took up most of the boot space in our large Citroen Picasso.
The pram liner is perfect for a newborn baby, but would no way last until the child is 5-6 months as it's intended. My son was quite a big baby, although not overly so, and his head and feet were touching the top/bottom of the liner by the time he was 10 weeks old. I was not ready to have him forward facing at that age, so for a few months I had to prop him up with a pillow until he was able to sit himself up, at which point I had no choice but to face him forwards. I found this very disappointing, and wasn't in a financial position to go out and buy a different pram. Unfortunately the Silver Cross 3D has very poor re-sale value, so I couldn't sell it on to fund the purchase of a new pram and was stuck with it for a while.
The shopping basket is a good size, but incredibly difficult to access do to the shape of the chassis and the cross bar above it. The fabric of the basket is very good quality, but therefore quite stiff and you can't pull it down easily to access the basket. As a result I rarely used it.
The hood, handles are the two things that don't feel such good quality. The hood doesn't adjust or stay in it's upright position very well. I never felt able to pull it fully forward and it never seemed taut, and going over any slightly rougher terrain (such as cobbles), or the wind would make it fall back. The handles are quite rattly where they adjust and don't feel solid in the hand.
The raincover is very thick - so again good quality - however it very bulky and cannot be folded to a compact size, which means it can't be transported easily as it won't fit in the inaccessible basket, and too big to go in the changing bag. This meant I rarely took it out with me unless it was already raining, and I used to get caught in rain showers fairly frequently! It also seems to be designed for the pram in forward facing mode only - it doesn't fit properly when it's in pram mode.
The final point is that the matching footmuff is not long enough for a child beyond the age of about 18 months. It also slips around a bit on the seat.
Overall I think this pram is "ok". I really can't give any more than that, and certainly can't rave about it unfortunately. I enjoyed it for the first few months but wouldn't recommend.
Summary: This is a nice pram in many ways, but I think the cons outweigh the pros and I wouldn't recommend it
