Having lived for over twenty years in Cairo, where home cooking was the norm, on returning to the UK I gave in to the temptation to try out quite a few of the ready meals that I came across in the supermarkets. I was often short of time, and that was my excuse for not going overboard on home cooking. I did think it might be useful to have a recipe book just in case, and bought The Good Housekeeping Cookery Book for as little as one pound as part of an introductory offer when I joined a book club. It went up on the top shelf of the bookcase, and there it stayed until I thought I would check its advice on roasting the Christmas turkey. It was some ... Read the complete review

The Good Housekeeping (GH) Institute was established in 1924 by Good Housekeeping magazine to provide women with expert consumer advice. Still going strong today, it test household products and equipment and creates and tests recipes for both GH magazine and its range of cookbooks, of which this is one. With 448 pages, containing over 750 recipes, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this cookbook would be full of text, with nary a picture to be seen. Fret ye not, for it’s actually jammed with full colour pictures, illustrating every (or nearly every) recipe. Not only that, but there’s a ... Read the complete review

Cookery Book - Good Housekeeping Institute It's a boring title and it has none of the glamour associated with the new wave of celeb chefs - but this is still the top cookery book there is, for a whole host of reasons. Now re-issued in a 50th anniversary edition, this is a cookery book which really does have something for everyone. Need to know how to boil an egg? It's in here. Need to create a desperately grand wedding buffet? That's here too. How about a terribly impressive dinner a deux? you guessed, it's in here. This was one of the first cookery books I bought, and it's about the only one from that era (about 20 years ago) that I ... Read the complete review

This is a new book to my library of cookbooks. I have always loved the Good Housekeeping books, but was really pleased with this one. The section talks about pots & pans, knives, blenders, mixers etc and is kind of short. It's been done so much better in other books that I don't think they really needed to bother with it here. However, once you get passed this you into the full colour picture index. This is visual treat for any food lover. For easy reference the index is split into sections, i.e. soups, chicken, fish, shellfish, starters, beef & veal, turkey, eggs & cheese, salads, vegetarian, rice, grains & noodles, desserts, cakes etc. ... Good house keeping cookery book the cook classic companion Good housekeeping has had a magazine going for many years with tips and ideas and cookery recipes. There are several good housekeeping recipe books published. I have the standard good housekeeping cookery book its years old, first published 1948! (My copy only 10 yrs old) I assume the recipes and contents have changed and are different in the copy I have. This book is a big fat book 590 pages. I have other books but often use this one. It is an excellent book one which would be good to give someone starting up cooking for him or herself. In fact Sally has a copy an older one of mine I gave ... Read the complete review

Sevens live in the real world and read about the fictional Famous Five - how odd!
None its a decent adventure
The Closers - Michael Connelly
Brilliant novel
None really
The Busy Busy Day - Claire Freedman
Theatre Shoes - Noel Streatfeild
Elven Star - Margaret Weis
Deeper characters, a subtler plot that even moved me at points. Less pointless running around.
Weis and Hickman still can't exactly turn a good phrase and this isn't exactly deep
The Sanctuary Sparrow - Ellis Peters
Something Blue - Emily Giffin
Amazing
Darcy annoyed me at the beginning
On The Pond - Dawn Sirett
Great format and illustrations.
Too short
