Advantages: Great layout, good easy recipes
Disadvantages: None that I can think of
This is a new book to my library of cookbooks. I have always loved the Good Housekeeping books, but was really pleased with this one. The section talks about pots & pans, knives, blenders, mixers etc and is kind of short. It's been done so much better in other books that I don't think they really needed to bother with it here. However, once you get passed this you into the full colour picture index. This is visual treat for any food lover. For easy reference the index is split into sections, i.e. soups, chicken, fish, shellfish, starters, beef & veal, turkey, eggs & cheese, salads, vegetarian, rice, grains & noodles, desserts, cakes etc. Each of these sections has colour photo of the dish along with a small description of main ingredients, no. of servings and the page number you'll find it on. I have found this a really useful index to use - it's a good mouthwatering start to the book. The rest of the book is laid out using the same section headings and contains the full recipes for each of the photos. You still get pictures with the recipes so you don't have to keep flicking back to see if yours looks how it should. There are some reference notes throughout the book, they are simple and straight to the point. Nothing in-depth. The recipes themselves are really easy to follow and have useful info at the top - no. servings, preperation & cooking times, suitable for freezing, calories per serving. Well laid out and step-by-step recipes for ease of use. Recipes include;Steak & Stilton Parcels, Chicken with mushrooms & cognac, Seafood pie with Leeks & blue cheese, Veggie Tempura, Linguine with Smoked Salmon & Clams, and from my favourite section - Old fashioned rice pudding, Creme brulee, petits pot de Creme au Chocolat (which look divine!)plus ice cream, sorbets, cakes, biscuits. It a sweet-tooth heaven! Alot of the recipes are really old favourites under a posh name. T
his is an ideal first cookbook for anyone's shelf. I have owned it a month and have used it on numerous occasions already.
