Advantages: good recipes
Disadvantages: ?
Good house keeping cookery book the cook classic companion Good housekeeping has had a magazine going for many years with tips and ideas and cookery recipes. There are several good housekeeping recipe books published. I have the standard good housekeeping cookery book its years old, first published 1948! (My copy only 10 yrs old) I assume the recipes and contents have changed and are different in the copy I have. This book is a big fat book 590 pages. I have other books but often use this one. It is an excellent book one which would be good to give someone starting up cooking for him or herself. In fact Sally has a copy an older one of mine I gave her when she started uni. This book starts with a chapter on eating for health this gives information on vitamins, fats cholesterol, carbohydrates, sugar, salt minerals. Advice on how much our bodies needs. Following chapters are recipes for soups, starters, fish, meat, poultry, game, and stuffings. Chapters on herbs, spices and sauces. Recipes for vegetables, salads, eggs, cheese. Pizza’s, pasta’s and rice dishes. Then an a-z of fruit and nuts how to prepare and serve. Recipes of different pastries, cakes, biscuits, how to make breads. Jams and jellies chutney and pickle recipes for sweets. There are chapters after the recipes on presenting and garnishing food. How to cater for large numbers there is a guide to wine and liqueurs how to make punches and fruit cups, tea and coffee making. A section on equipping your kitchen, about microwave cooking and food storage. There are recipes suitable for a dinner party I was inspired to write this opp as I have friends coming to stay next weekend and was looking for some ideas. And some recipes for parties and children. The recipes are reliable always turn out good. The instructions clear and easy to follow. I suppose you could say this is my cookery bible, IO may look in o
ther books for some recipes but I could find most recipes that I need in here from a scrummy chocolate cake to a fiery curry or a classic casserole and apple pie. , Now what shall I cook for my friends maybe a casserole for when they get in after their long journey from Yorkshire (nr you Sue) I wont do curry as they get real proper good ones all the time so maybe an Italian dish. lets seee sorry got distracted there thanks for reading Mary…

- 11/02/04 Sounds a useful book. I have Mrs Beetons cookery book but this sounds like it covers more topics that are relevant to the way we eat now by virtue of Mrs Beeton being Dead for a few years now (I think). P |
