This is another of the BBC Good Food 101 recipe books I bought at the same time as the one-pot book from the same range. I keep a close eye on how much fat I consume not because I need to lose weight but because I don't want to put any on. Having now reached 36 I'm well aware that my metabolism may start to slow down a bit and I'd be horrified to find I was overweight after all the years I've been slim so I have a variety of low fat cookbooks and this Good Food 101 Low Fat Feasts is one of my favourites.
I bought my copy from Amazon for £3.99 but you can also buy it from Amazon Marketplace for about £1.50.
This book is just the same size as the one-pot version, smaller than A5 so it is easy enough to take it with you to the supermarket but personally I pick a handful of recipes out of it and write the items I haven't got on the shopping list, which to be honest isn't usually many items.
Contained within this book are sections for starters and light meals, pasta, rice and noodles, meat, fish and seafood, veggie friendly and some desserts. There are only 10 desserts and none of them are the kind of thing people eat when not watching their weight if you see what I mean, this is no problem for me as I'm not a dessert fan anyway.
The recipes are all very simple and usually only have about 4 stages to them, it tells you how long it takes to prepare the recipe, how many it serves (usually 4 so I halve the ingredients as there are only 2 of us), all the nutritional statistics so you know exactly what's going into your body and there's a colour photo on the opposite page of every dish so you can see if your offering looks right! I need pictures in recipe books to get me interested so this works well for me.
I personally have tried a number of the recipes from this book, the fish ones are excellent, some of the vegetarian ones are very tasty and the chicken ones are fantastic. There are some I will never use which I think you always get in recipe books unless you aren't a faddy eater at all. I don't eat pork, don't like turkey done any way except roasted for Xmas dinner and don't eat steak so I'll never use those but this book was actually worth buying for the ones I have used.
A few nights ago we were having chicken and I decided to try the glazed lemon pepper chicken and I have to say it was absolutely delicious! I had all the ingredients in the cupboard and my partner was truly amazed I'd prepared this from scratch! I'm well known for being a terrible and totally distracted cook so if the recipes are simple and quick enough for me to follow anyone can use them! The most amazing thing about this particular recipe was the complete absence of fat in the ingredients so the entire meal had only 3g of fat per serving (from the chicken I presume).
By using many of the recipes in this book I have actually dropped a couple of pounds in weight without trying over a couple of weeks so they do work if you want to lose weight.
Overall I'm very impressed with this book and it's become another of my favourites. I have several "low fat" and "no fat" recipe books but the majority involve recipes that I'm not likely to have the ingredients for or involve so much effort I can't be bothered with them but in this book they are all simple to prepare and mostly use everyday items. I love the fact there are photos to drool over while I prepare the food and that they tell you the nutritional stats so you know exactly what you're eating.
This is well worth buying if you want to keep an eye on how much fat you eat, even if you don't use all the recipes there's something for everyone in this book. Highly recommended.
Summary: Thoroughly recommended
