The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - Mark Haddon: ... voice of Christopher, Mark Haddon s teenaged autistic narrator, is as unique and original as a reader is likely to find. His hilarious yet painfully logical explanation of why he hates metaphors but doesn t mind similes will evoke laughter that is more suitable to at-home-in-the-bed-reading than to out-in-public-getting-stared-at-like-the-guy-who talks-to-lamp-posts-reading. Above and beyond the fresh story-tel...

thingywhatsit Sun at Midnight - Rosie Thomas
... Thomas writes with beautiful, effortless prose, and shows a rare compassion and a real understanding of the nature of love” This was the quote that greeted me within the first page of her book and was made by the Sunday Times, although Cosmopolitan and the Mail on Sunday were less wordy in their assessment of her abilities. I started reading the book with an open mind. It is a story that centers around two main characters, Alice Peel, and a man called Rooker, both finding themselves part of an expedition to the Antarctic, both for different reasons and both having circumstances that pursuaded them to take the decision to go there. The story is about a love affair,...

LanaFabb The Damage Done - Warren Fellows
... the very moment i opened this book i knew it was going to be gripping. This book is a sensational true story about how Warren Fellows survived life inside a Bangok prison, it tells you in graphic detail of how he ended up going from law abiding to trafficing heroin into Australia. I myself am against drug abuse and dealing and thought that i would be pleased that Warren was put in prison, instead i felt for him, the torture both physically and mentally was almost too much for me to read about. It is a harrowing book but yet one that is so interesting and factual that i couldn t put it down and would recommend to as many people as possible to read this. Enjo...

sunmeilan The Mannequin Man - Luca Di Fulvio
... I ve had a couple of bad experiences with books badly translated from the original language recently, but I m glad I didn t let it put me off, because this book was well worth the read. Patrick McKeown, the translator, has done a superb job of converting a beautifully written book into English. The author, Luca di Fulvio, has been likened to Thomas Harris, the author of the Hannibal Lecter novels, and there are definitely some comparisons to be made; also with Henning Mankell. Anyone who enjoys thrillers rather than the traditional cozy type of crime fiction will enjoy this book. The author Luca di Fulvio is based in Rome. He writes both thrillers and, stra...
