Without delving into the actual plot, let me introduce you to the characters: Professor Aronnax - the narrator is a Professor at the Museum of Paris with a specialist interest in ichthyology. He is a man of science and principle (and to some extent, it would seem, a man of God, though this is shown more in his appreciation of creation and his moral principles than in any particular ideology). When he is to an extent imprisoned on the submarine "Nautilous" by Captain Nemo, his indignation is considerably tempered by the amazing possibilities of research in this vessel that were previously unimaginable to him. Conseil - Aronnax's ... Read the complete review

After the mysterious attack at the Pacific Ocean, Professor Aronnax was invited upon the Abraham Lincoln to try and discover what had caused the attack on the Scotia. During a fight, Professor Aronnax, his faithful servant Conseil, and Ned Land, a Canadian harpoon who was also on board the Abraham Lincoln was all thrown overboard. After a while floating in the sea, M. Aronnax and Conseil found a submarine. M. Aronnax had no energy left in him to climb on and neither did Conseil. Just then, someone grabbed M. Aronnax and helped him onto the submarine, and then Conseil. After recovering, M. Aronnax saw that the one who saved him was none other than Ned Land. They did ... Read the complete review

I`ve got an admission to make - when I first bought this book I speant ages trying to figure out how anyone could possibly travel 20,000 leagues under the sea - I thought it meant 20,000 leagues straight down! DOH! What it actually means (for anyone else as thick as I am) is that the story traces the events of a trip uder the sea for 20,000 leagues, which takes them most of the way round the world. Basically there are a number of reports of a weird glowing animal, and governments from all around the world decide to try and capture or kill this animal. When a ship tries this is is sunk, with only a very few survivors, who awake on a strange submarine run by ... Read the complete review

This book is an old classic, although still, even with the slightly old form of the English language used in it, I found this book very exciting. It is written by Jules Verne in the 19th century, 1886 to be precise. The books main plot is of a 'monster' terrorizing the oceans, hot and cold, destroying vessels with its long 'tentacles' and basically causing complete havoc on the high seas, it was the talk of the towns and cities all over the world. "There had been many reliable sightings many leagues apart." The 'monster was described as," long, spindle shaped, and sometimes phosphorescent object, much larger and rapid than a ...
