Advantages: Top Story, Detailed Characters, Loads Going On

Disadvantages: None

James Patterson writes a brilliant detective crime thriller with this one only for a change, there's no Alex Cross. Instead this book focuses on Detective Lindsay Boxer (who first appears in '1st to Die') which I think makes a nice change from his usual characters.

It's a bit cheesy the way this books features a 'woman's murder club' which detective Lindsay Boxer reconvenes following their appearance in the earlier book. It's not the actual club that I find cheesy, it's what they've called it to be honest. Still, I think it's nice that James Patterson has at least tried to move away from the stereotypical macho male characters he normally writes about. And these days it's an everyday occurrence to find women leading up real life crime investigations so it's only right that fiction follows suit.

What I like about this story is how quickly everything moves. James Patterson is always at his best when he's able to churn out twist after twist as it keeps the book moving and the reader engrossed. Detective Lindsay Boxer deals brilliantly with some really quite upsetting murders and has her 'club' on board to help her along. The detail in this book is excellent and James Patterson strikes a really good balance between what the detective is doing and what the killer is up to.

I find the characters in this book very realistic which I think is worth noting. James Patterson doesn't always write totally believable characters but the ones in this book are really well defined - especially Detective Lindsay Boxer.

I don't think you need to be familiar with James Patterson books to enjoy this book. I think it's best if you read '1st to Die' before you read this but it'll work on its own I think. If you like detective books and enjoy a thrill-chase then this is a good book for you. I think it deserves five stars.
