Although I am an avid reader of history, I do tend to limit myself to the pre-gunpowder era, a time that seems different enough from the modern world as to make it intriguing and almost otherworldly, which in cultural terms it often is. Finding myself house sitting a few weeks ago and surrounded by a book collection that was particularly alien to my normal interests I was drawn to the nearest thing to a history book that I could find. We often forget that when we look back at history it really starts as recently as yesterday and our view of even the most recent events can often be very insightful. “Thirty Years of Hurt” is a look at a recent history of football violence ...
