Although I am an avid reader of history, I do tend to limit myself to the pre-gunpowder era, a time that seems different enough from the modern world as to make it intriguing and almost otherworldly, which in cultural terms it often is. Finding myself house sitting a few weeks ago and surrounded by a book collection that was particularly alien to my normal interests I was drawn to the nearest thing to a history book that I could find.
