Virgin Widow - Anne O'Brien - A compelling and well balanced historical novel. The lack of evidence about the main character, limits historical accuracy.
Epitaph for Three Women - Jean Plaidy - Good characterisation and accurate basic historical background. Weaker than this author's average storytelling.
Ship of Brides - Jojo Moyes - Intriguing story First chapter a bit slow
Two Caravans - Marina Lewycka - Touching and surprisingly funny given the bleak subject matter Some characters get a little lost; a few overly convenient plot coincidences
Boy in the Striped Pyjamas - John Boyne - Simply written, clear moral messages, engaging central character Central character's attititudes require much suspension of belief
