Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck: ... behaves George will allow him to tend for the rabbits that they plan to keep on the farm. One of the central themes of this book is the desire of men to own their own piece of land, once they arrive at the farm some of the other workers also share their dreams and this reflects a time when a mans worth was measured by the land he owned and the desire to be independent at a time of extreme hardship across the count...

mummy2harry This Is Your Song, Lola Rose - Donna Hay
... really grabbing you in but it just didn't for me. Lola's flatmate drove me mad and I desperately wanted to skip these scenes! Her dad was just awful, I can't believe people are like this but I suppose they are really, especially when they are given God-status by their fans - but this didn't stop me deeply disliking him. Dinah the PA was hilarious and probably my favourite character which is saying something, as she only appeared very rarely in the book, I wish Hay had written more of her into the book. Being written in the third person, the book did read very well, and was therefore able to focus on a broad story and delve into the characters lives deeply and seamlessl...

owensmum Marshmallows for Breakfast - Dorothy Koomson
... not comfortable with. It is clear that Kendra has suffered in her past and has difficulty dealing with her emotions. She fears the children at first but soon grows to love them. I really enjoyed this book. The flashbooks built up gradually. Initially I assumed they all related to the same event but it eventually becomes clearer that two events have effected Kendras life. The way the author interwove these flashbacks into the story created suspense and made me want to keep reading to find out more. I liked Kendra. I did think she was a bit cold and cowardly at first, always running away. Not wanting to face up to situations. But once I found out more I started to app...

Maximus-Qualitus The Quantum Connection - Travis S. Taylor
... had actually been a brief and still secret war between the U.S and its enemies, who have invented a newer warp drive technology. Another secret to come out was that the U.S. had been sending faster-than-light ships to other star systems. Most secret of all was that unfriendly aliens were observing the Earth, and U.S. spaceships were at war with the unknown aliens. Steve is abducted by those very same aliens and held prisoner on one of their ships orbiting Saturn. At first, he was one of three human prisoners, but he had just seen the aliens completely dissect one of the other prisoners, and it looked as if Steve or a female Russian captive are scheduled to be the...
