Traitor's Purse - Margery Allingham ... film noir. Trilby hats. Dark shadows. Blackouts and fifth columnists. The year is 1941 and Britain is at war. Albert Campion awakes in hospital, with no memory of how he got there. All that he knows in his amnesiac state, is the importance of the number 15 and that the fate of the country depends on him. There is no gentle introduction to the discovery of a body in Chapter Two and Campion is evidently in the thick of it as soon as he comes around. Believing he has murdered a policeman, he escapes hospital by setting off a fire alarm and posing as a fireman, finally stealing a car (albeit one that seems strangely familiar). Allingham’s earlier work had i... Read the full review: The Double Campion by chang2 |

The China Governess - Margery Allingham ... Allingham is known as one of the Queens of Crime, and brought her fictional detective stories to the fore between the two world wars. Her main character is Albert Campion, televised by Peter Davison (although frankly, having seen the TV show the other night, I m not sure that Peter Davison fits my image of Campion). This book is one of the Campion series, yet the detective hardly features in the book, which I actually feel is an advantage - Campion is known as a silly-ass , but is really quite a bland character, who adds little to Allingham s novels. If you want to start by reading a book that focuses mainly on Campion to get a feel for him as a character, Sweet... Read the full review: Albert Campion's creator by sunmeilan |

The Tiger in the Smoke - Margery Allingham ... quite as well known as her more famous contemporaries, Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Margery Allingham is nevertheless well respected in crime fiction circles as the creator of Albert Campion. Campion has been made into a TV series in recent years starring Peter Davison. Having written her first novel featuring Campion in 1928, she became well-known for her portrayals of society and post-war youth. The plot Meg Elginbrodde has just become engaged to Geoffrey when she suddenly starts to receive photographs of her supposedly dead husband, Martin Elginbrodde, looking very much alive. All is a mystery - if Meg s husband is still alive, why didn t he come forward e... Read the full review: "Killing mad" by sunmeilan |
