... View from the Bridge was written by Arthur Miller who wanted to create an Italian- American based character, after working on the docks of Brooklyn, New York with characters such as Eddie Carbone. Miller saw a mass exploitation by employers of the immigrants, who would work day and night to earn their right to be an American citizen. America was globally reputed for its freedom and opportunity and was flooded with ... Read the full review: A view from the Bridge by Madius |

Beowulf - Seamus Heaney ... have been many translations of this epic poem written by an unknown Anglo-Saxon skald. I won t go into the plot here, as it s covered extensively in the other reviews. What I will cover, however, is Seamus Heaney s magnificent translation, which I would imagine has bettered every single previous translation. Coming as he does from a background of storytelling, much in the same way as the original audience would have, Heaney seems to understand just how to render the Old English into Modern English. The edition I have is bilingual, with the original being printed on the left-hand page and the translation on the right. As someone who is interested in language, I find... The Nation's Favourite Poems - Griff Rhys Jones ... Nation s Favourite Poems is a compilation of poetry brought out in 1996 by the publishing arm of the BBC. It was compiled based on the results of a nationwide poll with the aim of finding; you guessed it, the nation s favourite poem. The anthology showcases the top 100 poems as chosen by the British publi... Read the full review: Poetry for Everyone by louanna8 |
