A Dictionary of Superstitions - Iona Opie, Moira Tatem:
... Opie is a leading folklorist, best known for her work on traditional children s games and rhymes; here, in conjunction with Moira Tatem, she has gathered references to hundreds of British (predominantly English) superstitious beliefs and practices. This is not a coffee table book. Each superstition is documented by a list of quotations from various printed and oral sources: anything from Pliny to what a young ... How to Insult, Abuse and Insinuate in Classical Latin - Michelle Lovric ... are so many unusual novelty books on the market these days, that it can be difficult to know which ones are good and which ones are... well, crap. In fact, most of these stocking-filler type publications fall in to the category of general crapness, but there are some which aren t half bad. So how does How to Insult, Abuse & Insinuate in Classical Latin shape-up? The book is completely self explanatory from the title, but it is slightly cleverer than you would perhaps expect. The text inside consists of actual quotes from various latin authors, playrights and poets, and therefore, the publication is a little more eloquent, and less childish than its title woul... Who Wrote Shakespeare? - John Michell ... is invariably the case that any book or article whose title is a question ("Who was Jack the Ripper?, "Was the Great Pyramid built by Aliens?") never actually answers that question. Mr Michell does not know who wrote Shakespeare; but his book does provide the best straightforward introduction to the Shakespeare question. Scholars deny that there is a problem. Many have a vested interest in perpetuating the story that the Stratford actor, who had no proper education, owned no books, had an illiterate daughter and could scarcely write his own name (in fairness it must be admitted that the Shakespeare "signatures" on legal documents may well have... The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language - David Crystal ... simply, this book is a fantastic tool for any student of language, be it English, French, Swahili or any other! Linguistics students will also find this book incredibly helpful, having entries as it does on several key figures throughout the field of linguistics - from Saussure s famous and influential Cours de linguistique générale to Skinner s work and the theories of Noam Chomsky. But as well as these famous people s contribution or lack thereof to linguistics and understanding of language, it contains articles of many important processes, phenomena and occurrences that we can see in the language around us at any time. Further to this, it contains articles on certa... Read the full review: An excellent reference book by sa_O33 |
