Soldier Boy - Anne Rooney ... have been working my way through a collection of books known as the Shades collection, but one of the ones I picked up is part of the Sharp Shades collection. This collection takes a number of popular texts from the Shades series and condenses the text a bit, making it a bit more appealing to those who find reading a little more difficult. The book is a bit eerie, on the supernatural side of things, as we meet 15 year old Drew and his little brother Martin, who discover bones in their back garden. When they explore further when mum is out at work, they find there are more bones. However, they aren t animal bones: they re from a human hand, and they seem to have a life ... The Last Noo-Noo - Jill Murphy ... last noo-noo was my favourite book as a child. The situation was I was five and refused to grow out of my dummy - I would steal my younger sisters if my parents dare took mine away! Anyway, I got this book for my birthday, which tells the story of an alien/ monster / thing who s mother throws out all his noonoos. He has one left, so plants it in the garden, and out grows a noo noo tree! According to my parents I didn t want my dummy again. The illustrations are great and the story is easy to read along to, perfect for reading to large groups as an activity or as a bed time story, and maybe even getting your child to read to you. I now work at a library and am surpri... Read the full review: Perfect childs story by coconut92 |

Private Peaceful - Michael Morpurgo ... Peaceful, written by Michael Morpurgo, is told through the voice of Tommy Peaceful, a young boy who signs up, under age, to join in the Great War. Morpurgo was born in was born in 1943, so did not serve in the war himself. Despite this, we still learn a lot of accurate information from this book, such as the horrors of war to the propaganda boys were fed to make them wish to join. I myself read this as it was on my English Literature reading list, and for a book you have to read, all I can say is wow. The novel is aimed at children aged 10+ (according to my local book shop) however the themes such as futility, cowardice, love and brotherhood are relevant to all ag...
