The Smartest Giant in Town - Julia Donaldson:
... you may have already guessed I have been reading through all of Julia Donaldson s children s books and the more I read the more I love. The Smartest Giant in Town is a tale of great kindness that was rewarded and it is uplifting for any child to think that they too will be rewarded in a small way for their kind acts. The book title is especially clever, the Giant is smart in more than one ways than one. Axel Sche... Read the full review: The Big Hearted Giant. by Emmald |

Monkey Puzzle - Julia Donaldson ... but surely I am working my way through the collection of children s books that have been written by Julia Donaldson. I am reading them as an adult but I can understand why the stories are so captivating for children. The Monkey Puzzle is a simple story but it has been written with such an understanding of how a child s mind can work. For the majority of young children the most important things in their life are their Mum and Dad and Julia Donaldson has centred her short story around a young monkey who is puzzled because he seems to have lost sight of his parents. Axel Scheffler has illustrated the book and the way in which he has depicted the young monkey is ad... Read the full review: I want my Mum ! by Emmald |

Lyra's Oxford - Philip Pullman ... was already a fan of the His Dark Materials trilogy by the same author, Philip Pullman, and I wasn t disappointed with this short story either, which follows on from those books. (If you haven t read those, then this review may not make too much sense, so it might be worth going to read them or at least the reviews on them.) As the title would suggest, the protagonist is again Lyra. Without wanting to give the plot away, Lyra sees what looks like a dæmon in bird form being attacked by a flock of birds. She rescues it, and the dæmon tells her he is looking for Sebastian Makepeace. The story continues from there. This book has a good story with a clever twist, but what c... JSA: Stealing Thunder - David S. Goyer ... Justice Society of America is a sort of invite superhero group that has been running in the DC comic book world for a number of years. This graphic novel comprises the series of comic issues entitled Stealing Thunder, 5 issues in all, and features a selection of old and new heroes as they must confront a new and deadlier enemy: the Ultra-Humanite. The biggest appeal for me in reading this was the unknown, the fact that I hadn t even heard of half of the heroes on show here. The JSA has a ghood selection of heroes, from Captain Marvel to Dr Fate, and the Atom Smasher. This collection is sort of a multi-collaboration between new and old, and when the newer ones are in ...
