Chart Throb - Ben Elton ... love Ben Elton, and I was very excited when "Chart Throb" was released, but ultimately I was a little disappointed in the book. Part of me was deeply amused by the book, and extremely glad that someone - even if a mere satirical comedy writer - had gone some way to expose the farcical inner-workings of TV s numerous musical talent shows. Most of the book rings awfully true, namely the extreme desperations of the various saddos and wannabes that are selected to perform on such shows, and are actually sometimes quite cruelly manipulated into publicly humiliating themselves. However, his love for music and his inspirations are discussed and this gives a good insight into his love for music. I felt this was interesting as it talks about the things he loved rather than drone on about childhood memories. I loved the story of the auditions for Take That and how the band eventually got together. Barlow is honest about his relationships with Mark, Ja... Elton, has covered similar topics in the past (Dead Famous comes to mind - parodying Big Brother and the constant dumbling -down on television these days) but Chrat Throb really takes it up a notch. There will be few readers who fail to recognise the Simon Cowell-esque character, ably performed by Calvin Simms, and fewer readers who will not recognise the similarities between the X Factor show on television and the one featured on the pages - particularly in regards to the method they use to divide the contestants into manageable groups: Mingers, Clingers and Blingers. Ratings are everything as the contestants are abused in the name ... Read the full review: Painfully Funny For X Factor Fans by goblinite |
