Firstly, Simon Barnes makes it easy for the would be birdwatcher because he only concentrates on Britain's 50 most obvious birds. These are the ones that you are most likely to see in your garden or the local habitat. He also separates them into different categories depending on where you are likely to see them such as 'in the sky', 'woodland', 'fresh water' and so on. There are only a few birds covered in each of these sections so there is no need to ever get confused!

Simon Barnes is a noteable birdwatcher and sports writer for the Times. He has apparently written over a dozen books and the couple he has written about birdwatching are both very accessible and enjoyable. Probably his more famous book is 'How to be a bad Birdwatcher' and this - 'A bad birdwatcher's companion' is the follow up. His definition of a 'bad birdwatcher' is someone that enjoys birds and feels a 'lift of the heart' but doesn't need to do anything about it, such as ticking lists of taking notes.
