Advantages: A truely compelling story.

Disadvantages: Graphic accounts of child abuse.

Firstly I should begin this review by confessing that I very rarely ever read books let alone finish them largely to my concentration span being similar to that of a gnat. David Pelzers book and true life account of what one can only describe as one of the most horrific child hoods ever documented was one of the very first.

David Pelzer has for the last 20 years inspired many people as well as organisations to commit their efforts as well as rethink there strategies in order to keep children safe in and out of their own homes and free from both mental and physical abuse throughout America. His story can also be used as an example here in the UK in order to better our child care services [ which have in recent times let many of our children down ]as well as to educate to the general public into alerting us to the signs of potential abuse of our children.

Dave Pelzers A child called "it" is his 1995 autobiographical account of abuse suffed at the hands of his mother. His is a story about a child not even recognised as human let alone a child, a child with no name, a child simply called "it". David Pelzers story takes us on a journey of extreme abuse at the hands of his alcoholic mother, both mental and physical abuse so severe that he almost died several times at the hands of her. Some of you may not wish to read those at times very graphic accounts of such an awful life but I urge you not to turn away this book is not all about suffering, it's about courage and a shear will to survive. It's about a man's journey of understanding and coming to terms with an horrendous past in order to heal. The book itself doesn't have any fancy language or clever words it's written very simply and is extremely touching on that basis.

We all have at one time or another been wronged in some way, we have all felt alone and we have all suffered. This book readdresses the balance; it makes those moments that you've wallowed in self pitty quickly fade.

In essence this book is simply a book you won't be able to put down even when the salty tears blur your vision.Abook you will always remember and both a man and child you will always admire.

Summary: Everyone should read this book.

I have read this book and the ones that follow on and I must say that A Child Called "It" is the most disturbing book I have ever read, but even as the unbelievable and abusive events that happen to him are being explained I still had to keep reading even though I felt total horror and heartache for him. I cannot believe that someone can stay so strong and come out of it so well balanced. Great review! Made me think of the book all over again.
