A Deadly Brew - Susanna Gregory ... well-endowed college has created petty in-fighting amongst the academics as new appointments are made. The winter and spring have been appallingly wet, there is a fever outbreak amongst the poorer townspeople and the country is not yet fully recovered from the aftermath of the plague. The increasing reputation and wealth of the Cambridge colleges are causing dangerous tensions between the town, Church and University and then the poisoned wine kills the first victim - a student. The second victim is Dittone, the deputy master of the new college, but there seems no connection between him and the student. Matthew must establish the facts before relations between town and gown spiral out of control.

The Tarnished Chalice - Susanna Gregory

Premium Review More Matthew Bartholomew! (650 words)
by mogdred - written on 06/03/09 (Very useful, 389 readings)
Rating:

"The Tarnished Chalice" is the twelfth book in the Matthew Bartholomew series by Susanna Gregory. The series has run to fourteen chronicles now and number fifteen is due in June this year. It is set in 14th Century Cambridge and revolves around Dr Matthew Bartholomew who helps to solve murders/mysteries by inspecting bodies, usually at the request of his good friend Brother Michael. I first discovered Susanna Gregory and the Matthew Bartholomew chronicles a few years ago and have read them sporadically - usually in no particular order. The books are easy enough to read as stand alone books although they are part of a series, but they are generally more ...

Rating:

"The Butcher of Smithfield" is the third in the new series Susanna Gregory is writing - the Thomas Chaloner stories. This comes after the success of the Matthew Bartholomew series set in 14th Century Cambridge. The Thomas Chaloner books are set in Restoration London and the main character is a spy who previously worked for Cromwell s government and has had to find employment with the new government after the Restoration of the Monarchy. The political backdrop of the new series is interesting and adds danger to Chaloner s exploits as he does not know who to trust. In "The Butcher of Smithfield" Chaloner has just returned from spying in Portugal and ...
