Advantages: excellent info and inspiration for anyone with joint pain or backache!
Disadvantages: strict diet, the old editions maybe a bit out-of-date, you may need other books with recipes!
My Dad had terrible arthritis/rheumatism and all his doctor could do was - give him pills! He kept asking her what more could be done, until she practically yelled at him and kicked him out, 'I gave you the pills, nothing more can be done!'
He had terrible pains in his joints & used to walk around with bandages around his knees and elbows - even in the summer! Several times he was bound to bed because of terrible backache! He got syringes of medication then.. And still, it seemed to take a loong time before he got better.
His older sister then once said, how a vacation at a spa helped her. So he went to a spa. Indeed, his health improved. But he also spent a lot of money in the spa! Being a factory worker, he couldn't afford a spa vacation more than once a year or so! (& the hot water wasn't really good for his veins!)
Then one year he saw a book at a spa, and an iridiologist. The iridiologist read his eyes & told him that indeed he had rheumatism (which his doctor still had skimpered about since he had unusual tests which she said didn't really confirm it). He told him to change his nutrition and his lifestyle, told him which vitamins and minerals he thought my Dad was lacking..
Then Dad asked about the book, 'Is it any good?'
The iridiologist was enthusiastic about the book & really recommended it. So Dad bought it.
Fast Forward a decade or a bit more: Dad is now muuch healthier, practically pain-free unless there are holidays, birthdays or other occasions for unhealthy food to tempt him.. He then knows what his pains result from and can abstain from the 'dangerous' foods until the pains subside.
Dad was really inspired by the book. After I had an injury and resulting backache, I read it too, and must admit it really *IS* excellent!!
There are 'before' and 'after' Xray pictures, so you can *see* how other people's knees and other joints improved!!
That is just terribly inspiring! Stories of bed-bound people, or people on wheelchairs, people with their fingers crooked... Getting their lives back, their health back.. It is just terribly inspiring!
My Grandpa had terrible rheumatism too. He spent his last years locked into their flat, cause he couldn't venture down the stairs! His fingers and his back were crooked.. He had to walk with a stick.. (The doctors gave him pills and such too, but they didn't actually help much, except a bit for the pain; it just kept getting worse, he found it more and more difficult to walk..)
Maybe this is part of why my Dad, his son-in-law (& the rest of us, except partly Sis) really embraced this 'healthy food' thing..
Because it isn't easy... This book is an excellent start, although we do not agree with everything it says, and recipes from other books may be needed.. (At least my Dad needed them..)
You have to give up quite some things - that you may not wanna give up..
But if the choice is between terrible pains and health, the choice is obvious.. At least for us..
Some of the questionable guidance for today's people: Dr Campbell recommends very raw food, including milk and meat (or only very slightly cooked/baked) This may depend on the source of milk & meat..
My Dad has been drinking raw (uncooked) milk (directly from a farm) for more than a decade, & he's allright! You may only wanna do that if you have a reliable source of milk (& meat) & other food..
Dr Campbell also recommends fasting to start with.. We're not sure if it's necessary, cause my Dad was greatly helped without the fasting even.. by just reducing amount of unhealthy food (with bad E's and other artificial additives and such) and other things deemed 'dangerous' for rheumatism/arthritis. (For some conditions, like potential overgrowth of candida or such, fasting may be a bad thing! For some people it may be helpful though..)
Also, Dr Campbell recommends people to give up coffee, alcohol, flour, sugar & sweets, etc. My Dad found that initially he did need to give up many of these, but later on, as he got better, he could indulge in some 'sins' now & then.. Also, he still ate wholewheat grains and flour, etc.
Dr Campbell's book does not go in-depth into vitamins and minerals, you are basically just encouraged to eat good healthy whole food (organic if possible) & do some light exercise & walks on fresh air (& make sure you go to the toilet etc), & also to imagine yourself healthy & happy & full of energy.. (Just imagining doesn't work. Dad tried. :))
In the edition we read you are discouraged from taking artificial vitamins or minerals or any other 'artificial' food.. (I mostly agree with this, though in today's world it may not be really easy to get all vitamins & minerals with healthy food!)
The Slovenian edition also had awesome illustration, worth of buying the book just for the sake of them! Basically 'old-school style' reminiscent of old days from 1850's or so... but with a modern twist!
Dr Campbell also addresses the problem of environmental pollution excellently.. Really linking pollution to health.. He talks about cadmium and some other problematic toxins.. and degradation of nature etc.
So overall the book is very inspiring!
My Dad has worked in a chemical factory all his adult life (so did Grandpa), so his health problems are not really that surprising.
The surprising thing is, that despite working in a chemical factory, my Dad managed to reverse the illness and actually got healthier!!
His co-workers at first teased him, but when they saw he became healthier and healthier (while some other co-workers with similar ailments continued to eat unhealthy food and kept staying home on sick leave, with great pains!) they started to respect him.
Later on, 'healthy food' did become sort of a 'hobby' for my Dad (as Dr Campbell advises), and we have a small library of books on healthy food and such.. books with recipes, vegetarian and macrobiotic cookbooks etc.
Indeed Dad did have to become a bit more vegetarian in the process, he was eating too much meat before.. (& too many store-bought sausages with artificial additives etc) He did find that being completely vegetarian was not for him (as he felt too weak for physical work then) & a sort of balance was needed..
We were all surprised to read that similar foods that caused my Dad rheumatism (& gave me an itchy rash in my early days!) were also responsible for cancer, diabetes, heart disease and other bad diseases...
Today, my Dad is mostly fit & well.. Mostly thanks to this book. It was a start of the path to healthy food & healthy life (which is still an ongoing process..)
I would give it 7 stars if I could, cause it really improved the life of our family so much..
Of course at first there was kicking & screaming, and we all had to be sort of dragged into this.. (imagine sulky teenagers agreeing to healthy food - uhm!) But Mum had some odd ache in her hand, and Dad said 'Try this.' & it really helped her.. When we saw this (& some new recipes were tested) Sis and I slowly stopped rebelling too..
Compared to Grandpa, who ate a lot of junk food - a hot dog, coffee and some 'iffy' heavily processed meat products with artificial additives EVERY DAY, and could never leave the appartment, may Dad's quality of life is muuch better!!
He loves hiking, going up the mountains, long walks, works in the garden and helps at his relatives' farms!!
The book might get a star or two less for not including many helpful recipes (at least for us) & for some minor nitpicks I described above.. But it is still so very helpful that it just deserves 5 stars on INSPIRATION factor alone!!
If you have ANY pains in your joints or back, get it!! At the price of used ones on Amazon from £0.01, it really is a bargain!
You may want to get the new & revised one, though I haven't read that one & cannot vouch for it or any improvements made.. so if you get that one you may wish to get information elsewhere too & double-check things..
(And then get other books too for recipes & tweaking your lifestyle & nutrition!)
Summary: Awesome book to start you on your way back to health!!

- 19/02/09 Great review. I was misdiagnosed with arthritis once and did a lot of research on it before I found out I didn't have it. It looks like an awful condition, so it's good that this book can help so much. |
