Arthur C. Clarke in general

Premium Review A true giant of Sci-Fi (269 words)
by John Rickard - written on 30/06/00, updated on 30/06/00 (Useful, 14 readings)
Rating:

He has just written a dozen times more books than they have. Despite this vast output, the quality of Clarke's work is fantastic. You will rarely read a dull book or story by him, and if you read one you find derivative, odds are his version came first. From his earliest short stories to the novels he is still producing today, Arthur C. Clarke is a true titan of modern fiction. ...

The year is 2200, a second Raman spacecraft is seen approaching the Earth. The Earth had been watching and waiting for this event, it was ready for it. Rama II , when boarded by three humans, is found to be inhabited - but not by Ramans. In Rama II, the story is told of the exploration of this second craft. Garden of Rama tells the story of three humans, left behind when Rama II departs, as they travel on the mysterious journey to "The Node", a sort of way station of the Ramans. Here they are told that three of the now extended family were to return to earth, to secure volunteers to return to Rama and form a colony for research by the Ramans. There is a great ...

Earth shattering stuff (451 words)
by - written on 13/02/01, updated on 22/05/02
Rating:

I’m not a big fan of Clarke and his visionary stuff bar 2001 of course. Richter 10 is believable, so it’s worth picking up if you’re not into the year 5000 fantasy scenarios he’s more known for. In 1994, January 17th,4-31am,Lewis Crane lost all his immediate family to the Northridge quake in Los Angeles, and now 30 years on he’s a world renowned seismologist who has a dream dream of predicting quakes and therefore preventing terrible tragedies that were bestowed on him and many others over the history of the turbulent plate creaking planet. At his Californian institute along with his colleague Dan Newcombe, they have almost perfected a device to predict ...
