‘A Clash of Kings’, by George RR Martin, is the second volume of the phenomenal ‘Song of Ice and Fire’ - a phenomenon in terms of its length, if nothing else - which stands at present at five brick-like tomes, and is set to expand yet further. The first book, ‘A Game of Thrones’ (which, I beg to intimate, I have also reviewed on Dooyoo), introduced us to the products of Martin’s doubtless fevered imagination, namely the fantasy kingdom of Westeros: its lords, its ladies, its tourneys, chivalry and pageantry; its glories of architecture, its long history, the magic and wonder on which the kingdom was built; the vicious politicking of its rulers, their betrayals, murders ...

George RR Martin is now half-way through producing the mammoth "Song of Fire and Ice" series and book 2 has the misfortune to follow the incredible "Game of Thrones". Looking back, it's really a segue, a scene-setter that gets the main characters to where they should be, rather than producing any major plot developments. ...
