Jude the Obscure - Thomas Hardy
by ddofdexter - written on 28/12/08 (Very useful, 34 readings)
Rating:
book shops or libraries. Jude the obscure is one such classic that I simply adore. Its story line and characterization is really strong. It was begun as amegazine serial by Thomas Hardy in late 19th century. Thomas hardy was turning at that point from the conventional romantic story to romantic with a tragic end to it. We cant say that Jude was a tragic hero with hamartia no we cant. He was no great man that was the first point that made me love him. he was a comman man like you and me. But he wanted to be educated and go to university that he was dreaming of from the start of his life. But before he knew what hea was doing he was married with a village girl Arabella who ...

Rating:
I enjoy a good story first, but Hardy really does transport you back in time and place to that wonderful rural idyll we imagine, but be warned! If you have never read Hardy and you decide to work your way through his books, any idyllic vision of the rural past you may have had will eventually be replaced by the harsh reality of living in these times and places. This is a nice gentle start to Hardy, but be prepared for harsh reality, the further into his works you ...

The Withered Arm - Thomas Hardy

Rating:
To be blunt, this story was very strange, yet highly original. The story is set in Hardy's Wessex and begins with a lone milk maid and her son. We are first introduced to Rhoda Brooks, a lonely milkmaid who works for a man called 'Farmer Lodge'. From, the first chapter we can gather that there used to be an affair that took place between Rhoda and Lodge which resulted and ended with a young boy. They live alone in a small, dilapitated hut and Farmer Lodge, we are told, has not acknowledged Rhoda or his child ever since. the affair ended. 'He ha'n't spoke to Rhoda Brook for years.' Farmer Lodge is introduced next, coming back to his house with his young new wife, pretty Gertrude. ...
