A Lesser Evil - Lesley Pearse

Description: ISBN 0141016973 / Author: Lesley Pearse / Genre: Fiction / When Fifi moves to London with her bricklayer boyfriend Dan, her mother is outraged. Despite initial feelings of horror at her new surroundings, Fifi finds the freedom from her middle-class family background ... more
A Lesser Evil - Lesley Pearse ... exhilarating. Insatiably inquisitive, Fifi is fascinated by her new neighbours and wants to know what goes on behind all those shabby front doors. Why is Yvette, the French dressmaker, such a hermit? Why doesn't widower Frank join his daughter and grandchildren in Australia? And why doesn't the formidable and well-bred Miss Diamond move somewhere smarter? But most of all she is ghoulishly fascinated by the Muckles who live opposite in terrible squalor. She listens to their violent quarrels, watches their ill-treated and wretchedly unhappy children, and is appalled by all she sees. When Fifi tries to help the Muckles' youngest child, who has been physically abused by her father, Fifi unwittingly unleashes a chain of events which will not only bring heart ache to her and Dan, but terrible danger to all the inhabitants of Dale Street.

?Remember me? was a book I received as a gift from Book Club Associates late last year. It is written by Lesley Pearse and was released properly early this year on January 29th 2004. I haven?t really read any of Lesley Pearse?s books but she has got quite a few bestsellers under her belt including ?Trust Me?, ?Never Look Back? and ?Father Unknown?. Obviously I don?t know what those books are like having not read them but if they are anything similar to this one they are definitely worth the read! ?Remember Me? tells the story of Mary Broad, a fisherman?s daughter from Cornwall ...

Premium Review Wearing holy robes conceals the cruelty which lies beneath (1117 words)

Rating:

TRUST ME – yes, trust me, this is a novel you will not be able to put down, it is a very sad story, but what is even more sad is that although it is fictional, it is based on events which actually happened, not all that long ago either. The main character is Dulcie Taylor and we are introduced to her and her young sister May, when they are only young children just after the second world war. Her mother is a bit of a flighty piece and leaves the children alone while she goes out shopping for new clothes or works part time as a barmaid, she is also having an affair with the pub landlord. The children’s father idolises his two children and there are many arguments ...

a few good characters remain. is a bit slow and lacks a lot of interest.

Light humour, easy to read and relaxing. Great story telling. Couldn't put it down!

Evocative, lyrical, beautiful use of language May be tricky for those with little knowledge of Scots

The next in the Sookie Stackhouse series. More supernaturals added to the mix.
