Generally I don't do real life stories. Recently the market has been flooded with harrowing recounts of childhood abuse, all of which I find very disturbing and which create in me a huge sense of unease that such books are a paedophiles dream come true. For this reason I usually don't even pick up books claiming to be 'real life'. With the title 'A Mother Like Alex' I initially thought this would be a heartbreaking tale of some poor childs mysery at the hands of his/her mother, but a closer look showed the subtitle - 'One Defiant Woman.
