This is one of my favourite books, definitely in my top 5 and I have read it about 5 times. I did find that once I started it I just couldn't put it down. The book is a true story about a young girl growing up in San Diego, USA. The young girl's name is Cupcake Brown, her real name because of her mother's craving for cupcake's when she was pregnant. We follow Cupcake, also known as La'Vette, from the age of 11 when she finds her mother dead and is then thrown into the child welfare system. We follow her horrific journey, one that is a complete roller-coaster of emotions, as we see her facing abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, all this while she ... Read the complete review

Must be one of the best books/memoirs that I have read. So completely heart breaking but so inspiring at the same time. The vivid story telling, just makes you feel her experiences and hope that she eventually gets her self sorted. I really was not sure what would happen next-it's an amazing story-no child should have to endure the heart break of loosing a mother, and then being ripped away from the only family she knows. I have since seen a few people reading this on the bus, on the way to work, I just wanted to go up to them and ask them how much they were enjoying the book and what they thought of Cupcake! The defining moment in the ... Read the complete review

I love reading memoirs as i find them fasinating and this book had me mesmerised within the first few pages! Thr story tells of Cupcake (her real name) and her jounrey through life (approx 30 years of it). At 9 she finds her mother dead which turns her life upside down. Cupcake goes through the child welfare system through children's homes, fosters homes and suffers some horrendous abuse. She becomes addicted to drugs and alcohol and goes on to depend on selling her body to pay for her addiction. She is still in her teens at this time, when she comes into the American ganster world and becomes part of a violent ganster gang for some time. After waking up helf ... Read the complete review

This true story is about a girl (cupcake)and her brother in the US. They are orphaned and having to be put in care, with horrible foster parents. She runs away quite often as you would expect and she gets herself into a whirlwind of trouble. She starts drinking, using drugs, prostituting herself and getting into gangster crime. This is all from the age of eleven. As the years go by she tries to come clean and tries to hold down jobs, such as working for lawyers. However the drugs get the better of her and she lapses and gets sacked, but she cant pay the bills to stay in her accomodation. The time it really hits her hard and that she needs to change is when she wakes up ... Read the complete review
