Advantages: good book

Disadvantages: the word fat

A piece of cake, a book written for children by Jill Murphy.
Jill Murphy writes lots of books for children I found this in the charity shop in good condition for 10p r,r,p £4.99.When I see a good book for Adrian’s library in the charity shop I buy it. . The theme of this book is mother elephant thinking she is fat and going on a diet. Lots of children will experience their mothers dieting so they will relate to the theme in this book.
The illustrations in this book are good clear simple colourful. Showing the elephant family mum. , Dad, and 4 children Lester, Laura, Luke and the baby There are good illustrations of food they can, and can not eat (cake crisps biscuits going in the bin) cannot eat. We see the elephants in keep fit clothes, on the bathroom scales, and there is a picture of a creamy birthday cake. The pictures will help the independent reader to enjoy the story.

The story is written clearly. The words suitable for a reader of about 7 yrs old.

The tale tells of mum deciding she is too fat (baby says mummy’s got wobbly bits) so everyone is going on a diet.
She throws all the cakes biscuits crisps into the rubbish bin and makes everyone eat apples cucumber, carrots, and tomatoes.
When the children get home from school she will not let them watch TV, they have to go for a jog round the park. When Dad gets home from work she sends him out for a jog too and prepares his tea of a sardine with grated carrot.

It was awful they had to do this everyday and by evening everyone felt terrible.
They weigh themselves and discover they are not getting thinner wibbly wobbly ,wibbly-wobbly says baby.

Then a birthday cake arrives; mum puts it away for visitors.

No one can stop thinking about the cake and in the middle of the night mum elephant gets up to have a piece of cake, when she gets to the cupboard she finds……… only one piece of cake left Mr large spots her and say
s caught in the act. The light is switched on and all the children are hiding under the table. Mrs large eats the last piece of cake.
Luke says I do think elephants are supposed to be large, and baby says wibbly wobbly wibbly wobbly.

This is a good book that produces lots of smiles. Thank you for reading with me, wibbly -wobbly”
