After reading the first book, The Bad beginning you would have grown accustomed to Lemony Snickets style. His odd method of attempting to convince the reader to put the book down in the blurb is peculiar but certainly made me more intent on reading it, even if it was another book full of misery. Lemony Snicket is in fact not the true authors name but is a pseudonym. His actual name is Daniel Handler but that is another story. The book I am holding in my hands is Lemony Snicket’s The Bad Beginning and it is enough to send a shiver down my spine – of absolute delight, that is. In a canny ploy which will lure the kids in, Lemony Snicket (such a great pseudonym) dares children not to read his book. On the back cover he tells them ‘there is nothing stopping you from putting ...

move along at great pace, there is no danger of becoming bored with these books, the characters simply leap off the page at you! As Lemony Snicket himself stated - "It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing". What child could fail to be tempted by that?! Prepare to be saddened by the misfortune of the children, horrified at the unpleasantness of their situation, repulsed by the evil villain, the itchy clothes, the dastardly plotting and the cold porridge for breakfast. A Bad Beginning is certainly a ...
