... kind and a good natured guardian, Esme Squalor on the other hand is too narrow minded with what is "in" and "out" (The elevator was not "in" when the Baudelaire's arrived which is why it was closed down). Basically, it is her way of saying what is fashionable and what isn't. It is quite hilarious at numerous points as at the time, turning the light on was seen as being unfashionable or "out" so the Baudelaires had to move around in the dark. The Ersatz Elevator is the Sixth book in A Series of Unfortunate events. After the first five books you would become accustomed to Lemony Snickets' style of heaping misery on the lives of the Baudelaires. The Baudelaires move to their next home in the Dark Avenue. The Baudelaire's along with Mr Poe go to meet their new guardians in the city where they were born. As their new guardians live extremely high up in the block of flats, they try to use the elevator but find that it is out of use and therefore are forced to walk up the stairs.
