Advantages: Excellent writing
Disadvantages: Not very interesting if you don't like SM
One thing that Amazon's good for is keeping track of what people's reading habits are. I know it's a pretty hit and miss affair, but if you browse by category on amazon.co.uk you can see for each category what's selling (and what ain't).
In the case of porn (or erotica as they prefer to call it), the top slot for years has been Story of O - which is generally acknowledged to be one of the real classics of SM literature. I often wondered whether there'd be anything to take its crown, but the result is a little bit surprising.
A Strict Seduction, an anthology of short stroies by Maria del Rey, has been in the top position for a while now. Given the quality of the writing, the vivid descriptions and the filthy content it shouldn't be a surprise, but it is nevertheless.
What makes this anthology different to other Maria del Rey ones, such as Dark Desires, is that the stories are all on one theme: Corporal punishment and submissive women. The more bizarre elements of her writing are missing - there's no bondage, fetishism, cross-dressing or female-domination.
You'd think that given the single focus of the stories the book would be boring and repetitive, but that isn't the case. The sceanrios are interesting and enjoyable (though only if you're a fan of CP/spanking etc).
What does this say about the British appetite for erotica? It looks like spanking is still kink number one for many people. And that Maria del Rey can satisfy the insatiable appetite for it.
Oh, and the cover is superb...

- 21/12/01 A useful Op. I might check this out. My tastes are slightly more than just CP/Spanking but a well written and intelligent D/s book is always good for the collection. A note on the price, length of the book and amount of stories would create enough detail for me to rate as VU. If you decide to re-write let me know and I'll gladly mark up. Good work. |

- 21/12/01 I can't say that the word paddle ever did anything for me either. And I don't think it's ever used in any of the stories in the book either.
