The Wind in the Door - Madeleine L'Engle
by shroud - written on 03/05/07 (Very useful, 83 readings)
Rating:
The second book in the Time Quartet by this author, this book also works quite well as a stand alone. It does not require any of the back story of the original to make any sense. Meg is much happier at school now, and Charles wallace seems to have emerged somewhat from his rather withdrawn self. the return of their father in the previous book has changed the dynamic of this family from one full of hurt and without its heart, to a fairly average middle income family, though with parents in the unusual job of theoretical scientists. The reader is intrigued from the opening sentence. as Charles Wallace comes in from outside to say, ""There are dragons in the twins' ...

and the peril he now faces. A peril only Meg and Charles Wallace can save him from, and by saving him, save several worlds and ultimately, the human race. Madeleine L Engle rightfully won a Newberry Award for this book in 1963, and it was because she did that this first came into my possession. My parents would regularly buy me books, and they were particular about what I read. Thus, I was given classics and Caldecott Winners, and Newberry Award winners. I was about 9 when I was given this book, and it is aimed at a age 9-12 reading level for reading alone. One of the things that struck me then, as it did now, was how understanding of children the writer truly was. her ...

A Wrinkle in Time - Madeleine L'engle
by jillmurphy - written on 01/08/01 (Very useful, 196 readings)
Rating:
Children like to read about other children. It’s also a super tale, full of action. But no, what I think they sensed was its lack of condescension. Madeleine L’Engle makes few concessions to the small ones in her writing, she packs it full not only with a fast-moving plot and engaging characters that are easy for children to identify with, but she also fills it with ideas. In A Wrinkle in Time you’ll find discussed not only the possiblity of time travel but also pure mathematics, the structure of atoms and the very matter of life itself, all tied in seamlessly with the story. And better still you’ll find these ideas also tied in with notions of ...
