Advantages: It is good to escape with a book
Disadvantages: Had to come to the end
A Thousand Splendid Suns is an outstanding piece of work and a breathtaking story set against the volatile events of Afganistan's last thirty years. From the Soviet Invasion right through to the reign of the Taliban and post-Taliban. It puts the violence, fear, hope and faith of the country in intimate human terms.
The story covers two generations of characters which are brought together by the sad events of war and where people had to struggle to survive. Also had to raise families under terrible conditions and their search for happiness.
Thousand Splendid Suns covers three decades of Afghan history and it is a deeply moving account of family and friendship.
This is another outstanding novel and a worthwhile read. It may not be as great as The Kite Runner but it is not far off.
It is about Miriam who is 15 and after her Mother dies she is sent away to Kabul where she married Rasheed who was very unhappy and bitter and it much older than she is, in fact 30 years her senior. It tells of the unhappy times in which Miriam had after to had multiple miscarriages.
After a while someone else joined the household and she was 15 years of age and she was called Laila and both Miriam and laila became very close.
The story covers the Taliban rule and how Afghanistan cope with gunfire and bombs dropping out of the sky.
It is also very well written and you are drawn into the characters and there plight when times are difficult and also shared their happinness when events are going well for them.
I certainly enjoyed the book.It is well worth the read and once you start the book it is so compelling you would not want to put it down.
