A YEAR IN PROVENCE BY PETER MAYLE After missing the entire TV series staring the late John Thorn. I decided to read the book that so many friends have such varying opinions as to its merits on lack of merits. For me it is a little pot boiler of a book. The 190 or so pages make it an ideal fill in between more substantial tomes. Winner of the 1989 Travel Writer of the Year Award. It takes you from a New Year lunch to the following Christmas End of Job Calibration. A cunning plan hatched by Peter?s wife to get all the builders to complete before Christmas by inviting them all along with there wives a challenge that no Provencal could refuse. The book has humour mixed with tragedy. The slim volume paints Provence along with its characters idiosyncrasies and customs in bright colours. For me the most annoying thing is Peter?s constant use of the word Wife. Dose she not have a name? Is she not worthy of recognition in her own right? This can not be right hove to have had to put up with all the problems stood fill square along side you she must be a Saint. In all probability, you should call her saint Wife. However I look forward to volume two and three.

- 04/04/03 I tried watching the series but was never really able to get into the storyline I'm afraid. Saying that, it's usually the case that the book is much better than the screen version anyway so maybe it would be worth a look. It was a good review. Ziggy. |

- 22/06/02 Hi!It would heighten the readability of your op enormously if you left two lines free between the paragraphs; your future readers will be grateful. Cheers, Malu
