Advantages: Clear and comprehensive, range of guides available
Disadvantages: None that I can think of right now
The A to Z guides have been published for many cities in the UK. I recently bought the London A to Z as I wanted a concise and comprehensive map to the city. I love this book as it's just so straightforward and no-nonsense. I'm not a native so I'll get plenty of use out of it but I'd imagine even the locals will find this extremely useful. The book is nicely presented with it's bright blue and red lettering on the cover. The first page includes the contents but also a well presented reference guide to explain all the symbols that may appear on maps, and also a scale. The inside cover informs us that maps on pages 4 to 138 are on the scale of 2.88 inches to 1 mile - okay, enough of the anorak information from me. =) Pages 2 and 3 show a key to all the areas the map covers. It details the Greater London Area so you just look for the name of the area you want, and the blue number over this corresponds to the page you will find a detailed map on. The next 100 or so pages is the map section and then there are about 20 pages of large scale maps which give a more close up view of Central London. Then there is a very good map of all railway connections for the Greater London Area. There is also an Underground map on the outside of the back cover for fast reference if you're on the move in the city. The book also contains a black and white map detailing many West End cinemas and theatres. The index covers famous London areas and sights and railway stations. Just look up the place and the page number and grid reference for the map is here and there is also a more comprehensive street index too. Finally we have an index to hospitals and health centres Overall this is an excellent reference guide and I can't really fault it at all. The maps are full colour and easy to read. The layout is clear and simple and the book covers a very large area indeed. So whether you are new to the city or a
local who'd like to be sure of where you are when you trek to new areas, it's no harm at all to invest in this guide. There are also larger scale A to Z guides available aswell as a more miniature pocket sized one.
