The only person that I ever associated with the name Beryl, was that naughty girl Beryl the Peril, from the Dandy, or was it the Beano. But no, Beryl Bainbridge is also a famous author, four time a nominee for the Booker Prize and two times winner of the Whitbread Prize for fiction. So well decorated then, in the awards, rather than the wallpaper sense. So when in my Internet bargain hunting mode, I came across, Master Georgie, another critically acclaimed book from our Beryl, for just £2 in hardback. I snapped it up and it sat on my shelf for six months. Sorry, Beryl. However, feeling rather sorry for the unloved book, I gave it my attention. Lets start with ...
