Advantages: first chapter

Disadvantages: routine football autobiography

Tony Adams' Book Addicted is the only football autobiography I have enjoyed in recent years. And it's for one reason: the first chapter.

Adams charts his descent into alcoholism and its effect on his career, friends and family, in startingly honest fashion. For someone who is best known as a down to earth, one-of-the-boys footballer of the old school, admitting to bedwetting is quite remarkable. He spares us no detail of this period in his life, and for that you have to admire the man.

The rest of the book disappointed me a bit. Despite the best efforts of the superb Ian Ridley, it does tend towards the usual 'The lads were confident of getting something out of the game' format.

Still, buy it, read the first chapter, and see Adams rise even higher in your estimation.
