The Adventures of Tom Sawyer - Mark Twain ... in the cave to the trial of Injun Joe, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is redolent of life in the Mississippi River towns in which Twain spent his own youth. A somber undercurrent flows through the high humor and unabashed nostalgia of the novel, however, for beneath the innocence of childhood lie the inequities of adult reality - base emotions and superstitions, murder and revenge, starvation and slavery. In his introduction, noted Twain scholar John Seelye considers Twain's impact on American letters and discusses the balance between humorous escapades and serious concern that is found in much of Twain's writing.

'Huck' is a classic, beautifully written and evoking the world of the south (in all its faces) far more richly. I suppose Huck is far more appealling a person to spend time with than the arch scamster Tom. On the basis that none of Twain's books are bad, and that this sets up some of 'Huckleberry Finn', I guess it's es...more

Premium Review The Adventures of Tom Sawyer - Mark Twain: Kind of like Twain penance (155 words)
by - written on 07/10/00 (Very useful, 52 readings)
Rating:

In itself, this book is OK, a very well written and smart kid's book. Tom Sawyer is an agreeable enough chap, although his endlessly childish adventures become slightly tiresome after a while. Some bits, like the section in which he cons another kid into whitewashing a fence by pretending it's some much fun, are deservedly recognised as vintage Twain. But compared to the book that comes after it, 'Huckleberry Finn', this is an essentially trivial and bitty book. 'Huck' is a classic, beautifully written and evoking the world of the south (in all its faces) far more richly. Premium Review A must read (118 words)

Tom Sawyer was one of my favourite books as a child. This was because it manages to combine excitement, interest and action throughout the whole story. There is never a dull moment and I was totally enraptured from beginning to end. The adventures star Tom as a young boy in the deep south in America and his experiences with a young black boy, who is a slave. This does not sound very interesting, but in fact, there are so many aspects to the story that they cannot all be explained adequately. It is a story of a boy growing up, experiencing new things and maturing with his adventures. It is funny, compelling and never dull. Read it. ...  Read the complete review

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer - Mark Twain: Tom Sawyer - what a scamp :-) (423 words)
by - written on 08/09/00
Rating:

Tom Sawyer is a small boy living in a Southern village in the 18th century. The story itself isn`t that good, the plot isn`t termendous but it serves to tie the book together. I found the book to be essentially a series of stories about the adventures of one boy, Tom Sawyer, with a number of his friends, addequately tied together with the plot. Don`t get me wrong - the book isn`t bad by any possible stretch of the imagination. I think the plot could have been better contrived and tied the stories together better, but it is still an excellent book. I`m sure everyone can sympathise with the boys feelings as they play, and remember the lessons they learn. ...  Read the complete review
