Advantages: Old-fashioned whodunnit, but with 21st century characters

Disadvantages: The series is becoming formulaic

Mrs Tamworthy, a nouveau-riche lady of the manor who owns the village of Lower Tapor, is afraid that she is about to be murdered by one of her own family. She invites the local amateur sleuth Agatha Raisin to her 80th birthday party, where the inevitable happens.
Agatha soon discovers that the local villagers as well as Mrs Tamworthy's family have good reasons to wish her dead. Joining Agatha for this investigation is teenager Toni Gilmour, who seems to have an in-born knack for detective work, but whose youthful charms make Agatha feel old and dowdy.
Inter-woven with the story are Agatha's continued yearning for her ex-husband James Lacey and her determination to organise the perfect Christmas dinner.
This is the 18th of the Agatha Raisin series. Those familiar with these books will know exactly what to expect. I enjoyed it more than some of Agatha's more recent outings. Newcomers to the series will find it easy to read, suitable for curling up on the sofa with a cup of tea, or for taking on holiday. If you like Midsomer murders, you should try these books.
