... although the book has changed names and put all of the events in to one week in order to create the story line. The book gives an insight in to the inner workings of an airport, the way things are done and the lives of the staff. Knowing that all of the events actually happened and were witnessed or heard about by someone who worked in the airport makes the book all the more interesting, and certainly gives you a view of the aviation industry that you never would be able to have other wise. In some parts, it's quite ...more

I had never heard of Imogen Edward-Jones before so was not at all familiar with her work when I picked up this book. Perusing the book aisle in Tesco, I had firstly picked up Hotel Babylon. I was familiar with the title having watched and enjoyed the TV series. This book Air Babylon had been stacked behind it. Unable to decide I picked up the two at a cost of just under £4 each. I am a curious person, or nosey some may say, and love to know what really goes on behind the scenes, so these books seemed perfect for me. The book covers a period of 24 hours in the life of a duty airport manager. Each chapter takes you an hour at a time through their ...  Read the complete review

Air Babylon is a fictional account of a day in the life of an airline ground manager put together by author Imogen Edward-Jones from anecdotal evidence told to her by people who work in the industry. Each chapter covers the events of one hour so the reader is taken through the day from the moment the narrator arrives at work to clocking off time. It follows the same format as “Hotel Babylon” by the same author which exposes the seedier and sometimes cut throat world of the high class hotel industry; this time, though, the reader finds out how seats are allocated at check-in, why it pays never to be rude to cabin crew and what exactly happens when a passenger ...  Read the complete review

Air Babylon is part of a series of Babylon books written by Imogen Edwards-Jones, with Anonymous - an insider of the industry that she is writing about. Air Babylon is set in an airport, and documents a week through the eyes of one of the airport's employees. The book gives an insight in to the inner workings of an airport, the way things are done and the lives of the staff. Premium Review Air Babylon - will you ever fly again! (157 words)
by - written on 16/10/06 (Useful, 76 readings)
Rating:

This book is a follow up to her very popular Hotel Babylon, now also a very funny TV series. It's written in a similar style - a 'day in the life' of a manager in an airport, drawing together many stories from her 'Anonymous' contacts. It's funny, shocking, and some of the stories will make your hair curl - how do you think they remove a dead body from the plane? Because it does happen, all the time! It would be easy to be cynical about the book, as it's impossible to prove or disprove the stories in it. However, I think it's a lighthearted swipe at the service industry - and having seen the undercover documentaries on TV, I think we all know how the staff ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Air Babylon - Imogen Edwards-Jones: Lets fly away. (132 words)

This book gives you the insight into the airline industry and to be honest gives you some information that maybe you really did not want to know. From death on board the plane to what people manage to smuggle on board to what happens if you put your pets in the hold and the piolet forgets to put on the heating. Even though this book contains real life examples of what happens in the avaition industry but the book is written as a a story, following one man on one day through his life as a airline manager. This book is funny, witty and very entertaining but sometimes a little over informative. One warning is that you may not want to fly after reading this book, maybe not ...  Read the complete review
