re bored means you have no inner resources." But modern youngsters would probably answer this back, if they understood it, that is. * The Author * Alan Titchmarsh s early career was exclusively gardening. After a good grounding in his specialist subject, he has now branched out into all sorts of entertainment and educational media. Alan Titchmarsh - Nobbut a lad

Premium Review Man and boy (872 words)

Lately I have been reading ‘Nobbut A Lad ‘ by Alan Titchmarsh .I found it an unpretentious read which flowed along at a nice gentle pace . Throughout the book I got the feeling that each chapter was written as honestly and accurately , as memory will allow. I found the beginning quite startling as , reading many of the early chapters rang so true with much of my early life . However on the whole the similarities were simply because , I was born within a few years of Alan ,and I was brought up in Yorkshire also . Fair enough mine was a city childhood , but we regularly visited family who lived near Skipton ,so I found I could relate to his stories about life in the West ...

He can remember the conversation quite vividly. "So are you really going to be a gardener?" asked Mickey. "There's no money in it." "Yep" Alan replied. "I wouldnt mind being Percy Chucker." That was the first time, aged 10, that Alan had put into words his aspirations for how he wanted his life to turn out. His ultimate aim if you like. He wanted Percy Throwers job presenting gardening to the public on the television! He still doesnt know how he had the nerve... At that time Mr Thrower was presenting Gardening Club on a Friday evening and it had Alan and his best mate Mickey enthralled. Born in May 1949 in Ikley, ...
