The book's quite large and square, which makes it easy for young hands. Each page has lots of pictures; in fact there's often more pictures than writing and the pictures are wonderful. There's so much detail in each one and that gives a lot to discuss when reading the book to a child. Alfie features in a series of children's books and I remember them being a firm favourite with the children when I was doing my teacher training. This is a review of one of them, specifically 'Alfie and the Birthday Surprise'. I got this in a paperback version from the library and the RRP is £5.99 but it can be bought new from Amazon from £2.91. Shirley Hughes is both the author and the illustrator of this book, which means that the pictures perfectly matches the words. The picture on the front is Alfie looking at a wicker basket that's wrapped up in a birthday ribbon. This front cover was a bit of a disappointment, as it doesn't have the bright colours that ...
