Alfie's Feet is all about what Shirley Hughes does best: she takes an ordinary little boy who needs new shoes & weaves around it so much detail & humour that it becomes a whole story with a life of its own.
The charm of Alfies Feet & other books by the same author is all the little insights that children can relate to, such as playing 'this little piggy went to market' on your sister's toes, carrying new shoes home in a box and writing L and R on your wellies so you don't get them on the wrong feet.
Shirley Hughes illustrates the books too, & the pictures are exquisite; I could spend hours looking at them. The people have so much character in their faces & body language, & the scenes are so well-observed that you feel you could step into them.
A wonderful, evocative book that bears rereading many times.
