Advantages: Easy story, beautiful pictures
Disadvantages: none
Shirley Hughes is an extremely accomplished author. I remember my mum reading these books to me when I was little and now I am reading them to my daughter. They are unaging and are as relevant now as back then. The illustrations in the books are really superb, somehow she manages to get every little detail in!. In the book Alfies feet, Alfie needs new shoes and his parents take him to buy some wellingtons, as Alfie is now a big boy he puts his own shoes on and they go out to splash in the puddles, Alfie soon discovers that his feet feel 'funny' and realises that they are on the wrong feet! As you can tell it is a very simple story but one that would appeal to all toddlers. The other main character in the books is 'Annie Rose' Alfies little sister, she gets into all sorts of mischief and buy the end of this book also has new shoes! (The power of whining!!) Alfie is a very kind and caring little boy and I certainly enjoy reading these books at bedtime to Bethany, which is more than I can say for Winnie the Pooh, which I find impossible to read!
