Advantages: compelling, informative, haunting

Disadvantages: time-consuming

Atwood has developed over her writing career to become Canada's foremost woman writer. Her early book "The Handmaid's Tale", a staple of A-Level literature students, earned her, rightly or wrongly, the title of 'feminist'. In fact, she was inspired to write it after a visit to Afghanistan in the seventies. She was one of the last westerners to leave before Al Qaida, about whom we all now know so much, began their terrible reign.
Atwood has come a long way since then in literary terms, but she remains a champion of women.
In this novel she tells the story, based on fact, of a nineteenth century immigrant to Canada who is tried for murder.
As the details unravel throughout the gripping history of hardships endured and you get to know Grace, it is inevitable that your sympathies for her grow.
By the end, Atwood has placed you in the uncomfortable situation of asking yourself whether or not you are being objective.
Did she do it or did she not?
Atwood forces her readers to form their own opinion. Thinking it out for yourself is at the basis of feminist writing, and Atwood hits the nail on the head whilst writing a haunting and vivid tale that will live with you for a long time after you have finished reading it.

Was just going to say that I'm glad you said that bit about The Handmaid's Tale!
