Advantages: A great read with beautiful pictures
Disadvantages: none
Aliens Love Underpants is a beautifully written and illustrated award winning book by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort.
Published in 2007, it was featured on Richard and Judy and was a winner in the childrens book 5+ catagory.
You can easily see why this book is a winner. It is a hilarious read and the pictures are perfectly anchored to the story. The entire story rhymes and each page goes along the lines of...
They like them red, they like them green,
Or orange like satsumas.
But best of all they love the sight,
Of Granny's spotted bloomers.
The story tells us of how there are no underpants in space so the aliens must come to earth to indulge in their guilty pleasures.
They lie in wait until Mum has put the washing out, then swing and slide from the pants, having a great time until she is ready to come back. They the hurry away before anyone sees, unfortunately this time, the tiniest alien gets trapped in the pants and ends up in the washing basket.
The moral of the story is revealed on the last page....
So when you put your pants on,
Freshly washed and nice and clean,
just check in case and alien,
Still lurks inside, unseen!
The front and back inside covers are covered in pictures of differently shaped and coloured pants so before we even start the story my son makes us look through them all and decide what our favourite pairs are.
There are 12 pages of writing, each with a four line rhyme.
The book is priced at £5.99 and is available from mosat bookstores. Our copy was purchased in Tescos.
The story won the 5+ prize but I think that it is suitable for any age up to this as the pictures will amuse any child and young children will love the 'sing song' rhyming style of the story.
Summary: A lovely book that is recommended for all ages
