Advantages: robust, great pictures
Disadvantages: misleading cover
Any parent of a preschool child will be well aware of the character in the night garden. In the night Garden is a TV series shown on CBeebies and as a result of its popularity there is a whole range of merchandising to entice parents to part with more cash
All aboard the ninky nonk is a board book with a RRP of £3.99. It is currently £3.49 on Amazon.
The book has Iggle Piggle on the cover and Iggle Piggle's name in large bold letters which is misleading as the story is generally about all the in the night garden characters and Iggle Piggle only features on two pages.
The story itself is a very basic story of a trip the Ninky nonk makes around the garden and the passengers it picks up.The passengers are Iggle Piggle, Upsy Daisy and the tombliboos. Makka Pakka does not want to ride on the ninky nonk but does want to give it a wash.
Each page has a few short sentences and uses language that is replicated from the TV show itself. The story flows well and an end with the statement isn't that a pip which is the same line that is at the end of the story on the TV show.
The pages themselves are thick glossy card that is easy to wipe after the countless spillages. My son has ripped many of his books but this one has stayed in tact whcihc is a great endorsement of its strength. The Pictures themselves look like photo's taken directly off the TV so it isn't hard to see why it is so popular.
I bought this book for my son when he was about eighteen months old in the height of his interest with in the night garden and he has enjoyed looking at the pictures as well as listening to mommy reading the book and doing countless impressions of the characters.
Since my son has turned two he has refused to watch the TV show but still loves the merchandise. He slept with amongst others Iggle Piggle until two nights ago when he refused to sleep with anyone other than Lala so when I got the book out this morning to review I was some what surprised that he wanted to read the book when books are readily available and I do tend to read them pretty much on demand.
I have so far read this book four times during the writing of this review so it is obviously a story he still enjoys. On the pages where the ninky nonk is bouncing around I bounce him on my knees to give the idea that he is there and these tend to be his favourite pages.
This book is ideal for lovers of in the night garden generally but if you want a book that focuses on a particular character than there are better books around than this one.
Summary: Short story with bright pictures

- 21/06/09 Great stuff for keeping the little ones amused. My 2 year old granddaughter won't come to the phone when the night garden is on. She's got this book, and a whole set of them they follow the stories on the TV. |

- 19/06/09 My Great Niece loves this, unfortunately! It does my head in! |

- 19/06/09 That's funny, my two year old turns the TV off when ITNG comes on as well...weird!
We have this book as well and she doesn't read it much anymore, although she still loves her little plastic characters. |
