Advantages: Bright colours, Sturdy book, Easy to read
Disadvantages: none
Like many parents I love nothing more than treating my little boy. After a trip to his grandmas yesterday where he was helping me in the garden I pulled into our local co op store to get some milk and a treat for the little one, I don't tend to let my little boy have too many sweets so directed him to the entertainment isle, here was 3 shelves full of books where he had the choice of any that he wanted and in noticing Igglepiggle all aboard the Ninky Nonk from the in the night garden collection his face lit up, "Oh wow mummy" is all he could say before jumping around in excitement needless to say we bought it straight away.
For anyone who has not heard of in the night garden before it is an extremely popular children's television programme with many forms of merchandise available for purchase. The age ranges that In The Night Garden is aimed at are babies and pre-school children. Produced by ragdoll productions, .The programme is filmed mainly in live action through a mixture of, actors in costumes, puppets and computer animation, the creators say that the programme relaxes and entertains children at the same time.
The book itself is very eye catching with bright colours, a big picture of Igglepiggle on the left and the title written in white there is no chance any little in the night garden fan would miss it. The pages are made of thick card great for little hands to grip and very sturdy against trouble some toddlers that tend to get very heavy handed at times, the pages are also very brightly coloured each page a different colour with a wipe-clean surface.
The story itself is very simple and easy to follow and tells us of a bumpy ride that the Ninky Nonk makes around the garden and the passengers it picks up along the way, the characters that take a ride around the garden are the three Tombliboos, Igglepiggle and Upsy Daisy, but when Makka Pakka is offered a ride he has other ideas.
Each brightly coloured page contains a couple of short simple sentences using familiar words and phrases that you will find on the television series. The pictures are bright stills taken from the show itself so both elements bring a lot of familiarisation for little ones that in turn brings even more enjoyment when reading the book
My little boy will still watch the television show occasionally if there is nothing else on but still loves the books and some of the toys that are sold. As I only bought this book yesterday I cant comment on how long it will take for him to tyre of but judging by yesterday where we managed to read the book about 5x in 1 evening with him enjoying it every time, telling me who the characters were and talking about the story I do not think it will be anytime soon
. My little boy is only two so cant read as yet but as the story has a repetitive element to it he remembered the opening line of "once upon a time in the Night Garden" and the majority of the story so after a couple of times reading it together he was reading the book himself and telling me what happened which even though wasn't what was written it was really good and added a lot to the enjoyment.
I purchased the book from the co op as I said before for £2.99 which I thought was really good value, RRP is £3.99 and the book is currently for sale on Amazon for £3.59, being so popular I imagine that it would be available at many other stores and outlets who sell books or children's toys but have not really looked myself so couldn't say for definite.
I would recommend this book for any little in the night garden fans, I have found that all my little boys in the night garden books, have been great value for money, very sturdy and withstood the test of a heavy handed toddler sand amazingly still look like new. It is a great story involving many of the characters although books are available being dedicated to a particular character if preferred. The repetition and familiarisation contained within the book will keep little children happy for a while.
