Advantages: Dark, twisted and unforgettable

Disadvantages: Some long-winded descriptions

American Psycho is the one book that I own that I have made all of my friends read! While parts are sickeningly umcomfortable and the descriptions wildly vivid in places, there is no denying that this is one book that once you've picked it up, you will never put it back down. I read it through in one go; I just couldn't find a place to stop without torturing myself with suspense.

My only quarrel with the novel is the chapters that are devoted to stars, such as U2, that have nothing to do with the plot except to illustrate Patrick Bateman's views on the contemporary culture around him. While they could serve as points of exit to put down the book and maybe get some sleep, I ended up getting annoyed by them and skipping pages.

On the whole, with American Psycho you must read it, be sickened by it, and then you'll love it

I never liked the long winded descriptions either, but you're right about the need to keep going. Take the bit with the rat for example: it's not nice, but you still read it to find out what happens
