Bring back book burning? (American Psycho - Bret Easton Ellis)
Member Name: catatonic
Advantages: none Disadvantages: it will give you a headache and waste your time
I'm an avid reader and this is the first book I've ever picked up that I have been so offended by I was even ashamed to have it on my book shelf! Ironically it was recommended to me, although the person who recommended it didn't know me very well! I really didn't like any aspect of this book, for starters it's about yuppy culture - which is a rather obvious lifestyle to poke fun at. It also uses detailed descriptive passages as a device for conveying the monotony of the central characters lifestyle - that's all well and good for the first few pages but a bookful of monotony starts to wear you down! There is nothing redeeming about Patrick Bateman, and I'm old fashioned enough to still want to like the bad guys!, his peverseness is graphically illustrated throughout and although you find yourself unable to put this book down ( basically because you keep telling yourself it has to get better any page now!) ultimately you just end up with a throbbing headache! This book aims to shock, and it succeeds, but that doesn't make it a good book and it shouldn't make it a cult book. Summary: |
